"Cumberland County’s register of deeds returned to work Monday after a two-month disappearance, saying he tried to call his office ‘here and there’ since he walked off the job but couldn’t get through. ‘Unfortunately, the phone was busy all day long,’ James J. Walsh said. ‘Then, I was on the go all the time. I was really out straight with what I was doing.’ Since Walsh was elected by voters to a four-year term ending in 1990, the commission cannot fire him."
